[Nokia N9] Rumeur

n9nokia.png

Vivement l'annonce officielle

Nokia N9 set for 2011 release

[

img]http://smartfonefan.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/n9-01.jpg?w=550&h=383[/img]

So what is happening regarding the New Nokia N9.

Well there isn’t really that much to be honest the only thing I can say for certain is that it will use the all new Meego operating system. The picture above is one of many reportedly being of the new N9 but looking at the latest handsets namely the new Nokia N8 and Nokia E7 and then at this I don’t think so.

There has of course been a lot of speculation about what, when and where surrounding the new flagship Nokia Device. Of course there was Eldar Mutarzin over at the Mobile-review who said that it was nearly perfect in terms of hardware. He apparently had the good fortune to gets his hands on an early model. His comments I think would have to be taken with a pinch of salt as he said this on the back of legal action that Nokia took against Eldar with reference to a leaked N8 he got his hands on. This was also back in July 2010 before the likes of the New Nokia N8 and Nokia E7 had much publicity. It was also a bit like Gizmodo publishing a very detailed review on the iphone4 before Apple had announced its release. Apple like nokia of course weren’t happy.

Now Stephen Elop President and CEO of Nokia who officially started with them in September of this year officially announced that the Nokia N9 will be arriving in the UK by 2011

Quote:

“There have been various comments made at various points in time about the anticipated availability of our first MeeGo device and versions of the MeeGo software. My first impressions of our MeeGo work inspires both confidence and excitement, however it is also clear to me that our first MeeGo device will be a 20”

So that dashed a lot of hopes people had for getting their hands on this state of th11 evente art smartfone before Christmas 2010. I personally had planned on picking up this newbie in January 2011. There isn’t much around in terms of facts just a bunch of pictures that are failry well known by this stage and the odd video for example.

Quick specs can be found here listed in phonearena which I can only presume are based on rumour and speculation http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Nokia-N9_id4945 I also think a lot of this early information on the N9 is being mixed up with both the N8 and E7 especially the E7 as it is the one with the keyboard.

So what do we know about the Nokia N9

The only facts I have been able to come up with are that the N9 is to be a touchscreen smartfone apparently with a 4″ sliding QWERTY keyboard and it will run the New Meego operating system. Meego for those of you who are unfamilar with it is a new Operating system being developed jointly by the Nokia Maemo Team (this software runs on the powerhouse that is the Nokia N900) and Intel in the form of the Moblin team. More details can be found here http://smartfonefan.com/2010/11/17/meego-conference-destination-dublin-wow/ on an earlier post.

I don’t know about you but this looks very much like the New Nokia E7. The E7 is a QWERTY toting slider with a 4″ touchscreen display (CBD Clear Black Display) more details here http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-e7 . Compared with the picture above they do look very similar. So if the rumours are true and it is indeed a QWERTY slider with 4″ touchscreen then the differences between the E7 and the N9 would have to be:

Software & hardware

1. Software equals Meego. I recently attended the first Meego conference in Dublin (see above link) and can say that Meego isn’t quite ready for the market yet…but it will be with the amount of people involved in the development. It looks like a very nice exciting new open source operating system.

2. Hardware. If you take the chasis for the New Nokia E7 and you take the hardware from the New Nokia N8 (an earlier post I did a quick take on the N8 found here http://smartfonefan.com/2010/11/04/james-bond-would-be-happy-to-use-the-nokia-n8/ I think you would have the new N9 (with a faster processor see this article on Qualcomm http://www.techalps.com/android/next-generation-qualcomm-processors-provide-5x-more-power-consumes-75-less-energyual.html ).

So the Nokia N9 specifications would then be the specification of the New Nokia N8 (with better processor) and it would look like the New Nokia E7.

Now as Nokia are known for their innovation and being at the forefront of mobile technology you would maybe expect a little more something a little bit special and more especially with the competition being so strong these days (from the likes of Android and Apple to name but a couple) they could possibly need a new innovation to maintain their market lead. 13 devices manufactured and sold every second is some statistic.

I had heard a rumour that Nokia bought a company recently that manufacture 3D screens! I also have spoken to a Nokia employee who has actually seen this technology first hand which leads me to belive that this is something that could possibly happen. The technology for 3D without the need for 3D glasses exists but it is prohibitively expensive especially when you are talking 42″ or 52″ inch flat screen TV‘s. Now when it comes to 3.5″ or 4″ touch screens I think it is way more affordable. Rafe Blanford of All About Symbian covers 3D very well here http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/12033_Nokia_and_Intel_open_joint_lab.php

If you also look at Nokia Plug and touch here

If that was to come with the Nokia N9 wow. Turn your TV into a touchscreen PC.

Stephen Elop also had this to say:

“ground-breaking technological capabilities in everything from optics to nanotechnology to haptics, our strengths in emerging markets, or our assets in location-based services, there is an embarrassment of riches within Nokia”

Imagine if there were proper 3D games on the N9 (very possible with next generation processors) coupled with the HDMI out that both the N8 and E7 have in High Definition. All you would have to do is just attach your bluetooth game remote and you have a games machine.

So then if any of this is accurate the Nokia N9 would be a smartfone, games machine, multi media powerhouse, Satnav, mobile office, touchscreen PC through your TV and the N9 specification would be as follows:

Meego operating System (no more symbian)

Qualcomm next generation chipset 1.2 of 1.5 (Dual core) with seperate GPU

12MP camera (with Zenon flash)

720P video capture

Pentaband (use almost anywhere on the planet)

GPS (free maps for life)

Wifi Bluetooth etc

HDMI out

USB on the go

3D 4″ touch screen display with gorilla glass

massive memory

Slide and tilt QWERTY

Games Machine

External Touch screen thorugh TV

Now I think this (if indeed its anywhere accurate) is a very spec heavy device. Most of this technology is already there looking at the Nokia N8 and E7 so it should be entirely possible. Throw in your 3D touch screen marvel as well as a processor that has more power than you can shake a stick at you have a very powerful device. I think it will happen and can’t wait.

Nokia are a massive organisation and as Stephen Elop has said they have an embarrassment of riches (hopefully in technical innovation) and I think they should not be underestimated.

Nokia with the 201 1 Nokia N9 are going to bring the mobile experience to a whole new level.

It will also be placed above the current top of the range devices. If you look at what Niklas Savander EVP of Nokia said and thats taking into account all of what Nokia have already managed to fit into the N8 and E7.

“Niklas Savander: The N8 is not the highest-end product we’re aiming for. MeeGo will definitely come above the Symbian range in terms of functionality and price. If you look at the Symbian products, they are priced at the lower-end of the high tier in most markets, below the iPhone and competing with the Android devices. of Nokia said the Symbian 3 (and soon to be Symbian 4) are aimed at being affordable smartfones”

Time to start saving I think as my Nokia N8 or Nokia E7 will still be in contract when this holy grail of smartfones hits the market. I for one can’t wait.

This will when it comes to market be one hell of a device and won’t come cheap. The only good thing is that Stephen Elop said there will be reliable announcement to retail dates so when we hear about it we should be able to buy it shortly afterwards.

Looking at the future Nokia N9 as I have makes me wonder where mobile devices are going to. I have said in previous articles that the technical marvel that is the Nokia N8 has so much crammed into such a small form it is hard to see what else you could possible fit in or would want to fit in check out the X Phone video below it illustrates the point quite well I think. For me the hardware is going to be excellent as standard and as As nokia themselves advertise now “its what you do with it “that counts.

This device will be all about the Meego Operating System. It will be fast will look great and with the hardware being really high end it will be a joy to use. Deveopers have really taken Meego on (from recent attendances at the first Meego conference and the second one now not far away) and it is being built from the ground up.

As Stephen Elop is now on board Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business.

I really think as far as hardware goes we’re near the maximum. The devices of the future will just be more fine tuned and reduced in size. They will be very thin devices always connected to the cloud. They will have brilliant optics for Photos and Videos touch screen of course but will also have more powerful and efficient processors and recharging will be from ambient light. The skin will be of nano fibres meaning they will always be clean and will be non scratch.

These next generation processors will also allow real speech recognition as well. For those of you who haven’t tried speech recognition recently on your PC you should. I recently tried both Windows Vista and Windows 7 and was pleasantly surprised by how good it actually was. If speech recognition is as I think a real possiblity for smartfones and these smartfones get very thin as they are currently getting it reminds me of a program called Time Trax (that didn’t make it past season 1) where the main character from the future had a PC called Selma that was actually a PC in a credit card that he talked to. Unlikely you say but who knows with nano technolgy just getting started. I was able to from the settee (PC plugged into Flatscreen TV about 10 feet away) surf quite well and send a file via bluetooth to my smartfone. I also had a video conference through MSN all from the Settee. And for those of you who like Bladrunner you’ll rememeber Harrison Ford did use speech recognition to zoom in on a picture from his seat I did in fact do the same. I was able to go to pictures and open a picture and using the command ‘mousegrid’ zoom in on a few pictures in my gallery ala Bladrunner.

In my opinion its all about the software now. Apple changed the way we interact with our devices with their operating system. The modern Smartfones now have to have a very appealing User Interface and be hyper sexy.

So what would your predictions be for the future of smartfones in terms of Hardware and Software? What do you think the N9 will be?

Nokia N9 to come at the MWC with a 1.2 GHz CPU, 12 MP camera?

.

With the MWC fast approaching, rumors about the MeeGo-running Nokia N9 are starting to intensify again. If the Finnish source is to be trusted one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of this year will make its debut at the congress in less than a month.

There will also be some serious hardware under the hood. Apparently the Nokia N9 will be the first Nokia smartphone to pack a 1.2 GHz CPU. The machine-translated source mentions something about it being an Intel Atom, but we can't think of a reason for using a regular computer x86 CPU on a smarphone. Our guess is that's either a mistake or a hint that the N9 is based on the Intel Moorestown platform, which is essentially a smartphone SoC (system-on-a-chip) with an Intel Atom core as its heart.

Next, the Nokia N9 is supposed to have the same 12 megapiexel camera as the N8. Considering the qualities of the large-sensor unit inside the Nokia Symbian^3 flagship, that's just excellent news for all cameraphone lovers. Top of the line smarphones haven't been doing too great in the camera department recently, so the N9 might be the first true all in one device.

The final exciting Nokia N9 rumor is its LTE connectivity. Even the source claims that this isn't confirmed yet so you need to take this with an extra pinch of salt.

There's less than four weeks remaining until the MWC kicks off so we'll find if the rest of it is true pretty soon. Here's hoping that the whole list gets confirmed!
