Motorola new RAZR family

Motorola advertised its On Display event as the day's main event, which was rather bold considering that the world's number two cellphone manufacturer announced its WP8 lineup. However, seeing the kind of hot hardware that the Google-owned company announced, its arrogance might not be completely unfounded.

Motorola treated us to three new members of the RAZR family - the Motorola RAZR M mid-ranger, the Motorola RAZR HD flagship and the Motorola RAZR HD MAXX battery life champion. The first two of those will be available both as global GSM devices and on the Verizon network, while the RAZR HD MAXX will initially be exclusively available as a part of the Verizon DROID family.

The Motorola (DROID) RAZR HD impresses with its large 4.7" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display of 720p resolution. The back of the device is made of Kevlar, but this time it wraps around the edges of the headset too. The camera offers 8MP stills and 1080p video recording.

The LTE-touting Motorola (DROID) RAZR HD is powered by a Qualcomm chipset with a dual-core Krait CPU, 1GB RAM and Adreno 225 GPU. It will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box with an upgrade to Jelly Bean scheduled for Q4.

For the most part, the Motorola DROID RAZR HD MAXX is identical to its sibling, but it upgrades the already impressive 2,530 mAh battery to the hard to believe 3,300 mAh. It also ups the available internal storage from 16GB to 32GB. Naturally, that comes at the expense of a few extra millimeters around the waist, but the RAZR HD MAXX still measures the very respectable 9.3mm of thickness.

Finally, the RAZR M is Motorola's answer to those asking for phones to remain as compact as possible. It packs a smaller 4.3" qHD 540x960px Super AMOLED Advanced screen and measures just 122.5x60.9x8.3mm. It still manages to offer LTE connectivity, an 8MP camera capable of doing 1080p video and an S4 chipset with a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU.

Il n'y a pas que Nokia qui s'est pressé de dégainer ses nouveaux smartphones avant l'annonce de l'iPhone 5 par Apple la semaine prochaine. Motorola, désormais dans le giron de Google, s'est lui aussi fendu d'une présentation hier soir, afin de lever le voile sur trois nouveaux modèles : les Droid Razr HD, Razr HD Maxx et Razr M.

Le premier cité n'est pas un inconnu dans la mesure où il a été victime d'un nombre conséquent de fuites au cours des dernières semaines. Quoi qu'il en soit, ce Razr HD est amené à devenir la figure de proue du constructeur pour les prochains mois. Il garde un air de famille assez marqué avec le premier Razr sous Android sorti il y a près d'un an maintenant. Ce qui ne l'empêche pas de proposer des caractéristiques revues au goût du jour. Parmi les principaux points d'amélioration, il intègre notamment un écran HD de 4,7 pouces (1280 x 720 pixels).

Sous le capot, on trouve à la manoeuvre un chipset double coeur Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 cadencé à 1,5 GHz (1 Go de RAM). Une information assez surprenante quand on sait que Motorola a soigneusement évité ce fournisseur de chipset de longs mois durant. Le capteur photo affiche en revanche toujours 8 mégapixels. Il sera en outre capable de filmer dans une définition Full HD 1080p. Le tout tient dans des dimensions de 131,9 x 67,9 x 8,4 mm, pour 146 g sur la balance. Le constructeur a précisé qu'une version Maxx, avec une batterie haute capacité, allait également voir le jour assez rapidement.

De son côté, le Razr M est un smartphone aux caractéristiques un peu moins huppées que celle du Razr HD. Ce qui ne l'empêche pas de tout de même proposer une fiche technique tout à fait décente. Il embarque en effet un écran de 4,3 pouces de résolution qHD (960 x 540 pixels), un capteur photo de 8 mégapixels qui filme en Full HD 1080p et un chipset double coeur Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 cadencé à 1,5 GHz. Pour une épaisseur de 8,3 mm. Notez que ces trois smartphones sortiront sous Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Mais le constructeur a promis qu'ils seraient mis à jour vers Android 4.1 Jelly Bean avant la fin de l'année. Enfin, côté disponibilité, on sait juste qu'ils vont arriver assez rapidement aux États-Unis. En revanche, aucune information n'a encore filtré pour l'Europe en général et la France en particulier.
