Sony announces Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia E1

Sony has announced two new Android smartphones. The first is the Xperia T2 Ultra, a mid-range 6.0-inch phablet designed specifically for Asian and African markets where big screen smartphones are all the rage, and will compete against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Mega.

The Xperia T2 Ultra has a 6.0-inch, 1280x720 resolution display with TRILUMINOS, Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 and other fancy words Sony likes to use for displays that are often underwhelming. There is a 13 megapixel Exmor RS camera on the back and a 1.1 megapixel Exmor R camera on the front.

On the inside, the Xperia T2 Ultra has a quad-core Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.4Ghz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space expandable with microSD cards. Powering all this is a large 3,000mAh battery with Sony's Battery STAMINA mode.

The phone will be available in two variants, the single SIM T2 Ultra and the dual-SIM T2 Ultra dual, in black, white and purple.

The Xperia E1 is a budget Android phone with focus on the audio playback aspect. Sony claims the loudspeaker on the back is capable of hitting 100dB, which should drown out practically every other sound around you. It also has a dedicated Walkman button (we haven't seen this in a while), shake to shuffle and hardware buttons for controlling audio playback.

Other features include a 4.0-inch, 800x480 resolution display, dual-core, 1.2GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage space and microSD card slot.

Like the T2 Ultra, there will be two variants of the E1, with single and dual-SIM options. The phone will be available in black, white and purple.

Le Xperia Z Ultra était déjà une version bourrée aux hormones du Xperia Z. Le Xperia T2 en reprend quelques principes tout en la rendant plus accessible. Une phablette destinée à concurrencer la ribambelle de très grands mobiles commercialisés autour des 400 euros.

Le CES de Las Vegas vient à peine de finir que Sony redémarre un nouveau cycle d'annonce. Conjointement au Xperia E1, qui fera l'objet aujourd'hui d'une actualité dédiée, le fabricant japonais annonce le Xperia T2 Ultra. Avant de parcourir la fiche technique de ce mobile, deux détails dans ce nom devraient vous indiquer de quel type de produit il s'agit ici : la gamme T de Sony correspond à un milieu de gamme, tandis que le Ultra fait référence aux phablettes. Nous sommes donc bien face à une phablette milieu de gamme destinée à concurrencer les Samsung Galaxy Mega, Acer Liquid S2, Huawei Ascend Mate 2 ou ZTE Grand Memo.

Une fiche technique pour concurrencer le Galaxy Mega

La fiche technique correspond exactement à ce positionnement. À commencer par le SoC, un quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 cadencé à 1,4 GHz, un chipset assez peu énergivore (puisque composé de coeurs Cortex A7) affublé d'un GPU Adreno 305 et d'une connectivité LTE. Le chipset est accompagné de 1 Go de mémoire vive, 8 Go de stockage interne (extensible par microSD). L'écran tactile atteint ici la taille de 6 pouces, plus raisonnable en comparaison du Z Ultra, avec des bordures de 2,5 mm tout autour de la dalle. La définition de ce bel écran atteint seulement le 720p. Si ce dernier élément vous parait juste vis-à-vis de la diagonale, l'impression visuelle devrait être améliorée grâce à l'intégration d'un rétroéclairage Triluminos et du moteur de rendu Bravia Engine 2. Ce qui devrait en faire un compagnon audiovisuel idéal.

Pas de compromis sur l'essentiel

Côté multimédia, justement, nous retrouvons à l'arrière un capteur photo Exmor RS de 13 mégapixels et à l'avant un capteur visio de 1,1 mégapixel. Comme souvent chez Sony, le NFC s'invite dès le milieu de gamme, ce qui est le cas ici. Pour animer le tout, Sony a pourvu son mobile d'une batterie de 3000 mAh qui devrait bien tenir la distance. Android est proposé ici en version Jelly Bean 4.3 accompagnée par la surcouche Xperia et les applications Sony usuelles.

Proposé en deux versions, avec un ou deux ports carte SIM, le Xperia T2 Ultra devrait être proposé au prix de 400 euros hors subvention opérateur. Destiné aux marchés émergents (Chine, Inde, Moyen-Orient, Afrique), elle pourrait potentiellement faire un crochet par l'Europe afin de venir compléter un segment milieu de gamme qui se renforce mois après mois.

Introduction

From the company that's trying to have a smartphone for every pocket, taste, need and skill level - and is pretty much there in just a couple of generations - a midrange phablet should be anything but a surprise. The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra is only the second member of the Ultra lineup, trying to deliver the Xperia Z Ultra experience on a tighter budget. With hardly a manufacturer left that hasn't crossed the 6" boundary, Sony could definitely use a reinforcement to its phablet range.

The Xperia T2 Ultra, being a phablet, comes with a massive 6" IPS display of 720p resolution. A typical midranger, it is powered by the ubiquitous Snapdragon 400 chipset with four Cortex-A7 cores. In a pleasant turn of events, the Xperia T2 Ultra offers a better camera than its premium Z Ultra sibling - a 13MP Exmor RS sensor this time around, complete with a LED flash too. Nice!

So, a superior camera and a LED flash are welcome on a device that's easier to handle - the Xperia Z Ultra was just shy of a tablet and these aren't exactly a photographer's first choice. Another thing that looks good about the T2, at least on paper, is the battery. Almost the exact same capacity as what the Z Ultra has, the 3,000mAh unit is powering a smaller screen this time around and of lower resolution. Sounds like better battery life - and we'll be curious to test.

But that will come in due time, now let's look closer at the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra's full specs.
